Jack’s latest victim

Tuesday, June 7th, 2005

The “Jack” format has claimed another victim. This time it is WCBS FM in New York City. Now I was never a big fan of WCBS FM when I lived outside NYC but my first thought on hearing this news was “What about Cousin Brucie?” Thankfully the NY Times shares my way of thinking: After Decades on the Dial, Cousin Brucie Falls Victim to a Changing Media World. It looks like the 69 year old will land on his feet. For that I’m happy. But I find they switch to JACK for WCBS strange and sad. Then again the NYC radio dial is not what I remember from growing up. Richard Nerr’s FM: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio is a good read to understand how NYC and radio in general has changed over the years from an insider who saw it change from the Beattle to WNEW-FM’s demise as a true rock radio institution.

But back to Cousin Brucie. I think he sums uup things pretty well with this quote:

“Somebody out there,” he said, “a smart broadcaster, who really cares about broadcasting and not counting beans so much, is going to grab this. Because now there’s a huge, huge market to be serviced.”

Dear C-SPAN Radio

I very much appreciate your quality programming. I thouroughly enjoy your regularly schedule re-broadcasts of the Sunday morning talk shows from teh various TV network. I also enjoy the daily Washington Journal broadcasts. What I don’t enjoy is that aside from those most of the rest of your schedule is so open to whatever you feel like doing I can almoist never plan on listening to something ahead of time. I understand that part of the reason for this is teh nature of what you cover but come on you should be able to maybe publish a tenative schedule ahead of time of what you plan to broadcast.

This has been an annoyance up until now. Now I have a nice gadget that will allow me to actually record those programs I might want to listen to but I have no idea when those programs might be ahead of time.. I know I could listen to programs after the fact via RealAudio streams but that actually costs everyone money for bandwidth. Also it means I have to be tied to a network connected computer. With my new gadget I can make the recordings portable and put them on my iPod and take them along with me where ever I might go.

Podcasting is….

college radio with more reach. This realization came to be as I was driving home through Inner Harbor.

That being said I have been enjoying the podcasts I have started listening to regularly (MacCast, IT Conversations, On the Media, and The Dawn and Drew Show) I keep looking for new podcasts that have good sound quality and enjoyable content but so far haven’t found anything to add.

Oh I have also decided to put my newest gadget (Griffin radioSHARK to work generating podcasts of local WYPR content. And if I can get an external antenna working also content from WAMU and C-SPAN Radio.
